Moore County Crime Stoppers is honored to host and be a part of the annual Shop with a Cop event that benefits so many of our local youth. Every year during the Christmas season, multiple community members and businesses gather to coordinate and put together this special event.
Every year, our dedicated elementary school staff selects a few children they believe might be in need of some extra Christmas spirit to participate in the event. Upon selection, the parents of these children are notified and asked to allow their child to be a part of it. On the day of the event, the child is paired with one of our local first responders and given the chance to go on a shopping spree. The first responder will then assist the child in collecting their toys, clothes, or wanted items! All the while, the first responder will spend quality time with the child and make sure they use all of the money given to them for their shopping spree.
In addition to shopping with their first responder, every child leaves the event with additional supplies. Some of the supplies from years past have been pillows, blankets, food boxes, jackets, socks, and much more. All of these items, including the money the child uses to purchase their toys while shopping, are made possible by the generous donations of the public and the local businesses. Without them, this event wouldn’t be possible.
Since 2018, Shop with a Cop has served over 600 local area children and has an average of 120 kids participating every year. The schools involved are Dumas Elementary North, Dumas Elementary South, Cactus Elementary, and Hartley County Elementary schools.
